The scandinavian designers searched their inspiration in the bitter landscape of their homeland. Well known finnish designers like Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sapaneva were affected since the 1940/1950s. Ice, frost, lichen, bark, wood and moss have been examples for the textured glasses. It reflects the rudeness and the harsh climate of finnish landscape. The cool colours of forest, water and sky found its echo in the restrained, often muted colours.
Pertti Santalahti uses the screen and reflective properties in his transparent and transparent coloured, thick-walled glasses to demonstrate the flow and friz of water - there where for example ice and moss growing together. The rediscovery of the purely expressive force of the design in the 20th century stands with his work in the context.
