Between 1922 and 1925
Christian Dell worked in the Weimar Bauhaus with the workshop’s artistic director László Moholy-Nagy and students such as Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Carl Jakob Jucker and Gyula Pap, building on experiences of modern lighting design. In 1926 he was appointed director of the newly established metalwork course at the Frankfurt School of Art, a post he held until dismissal by the Nazis in 1933. In Frankfurt, as well as teaching and practising as a silversmith, he launched his career as a lighting designer.
Walter Gropius reviewed, that he was an experienced silversmith and talented teacher, because under his leadership the metal workshop of the Bauhaus got its actual contours and small-scale basis for a productive work.
After his dismissal in Frankfurt Dells begins his probably most fertile cooperation with the lighting manufacturer
Gebr. Kaiser & Co. in Neheim-Hüsten. Under the “Kaiser Idell” label he developed from 1933/34 on a whole range of lights. There is also the light with a flexible tube arm, which is even in the collection Bauhaus Archive - Museum of Design in Berlin. The applied modular system comes here to an exemplary way in the manufacturing process.
