In best condition.Lea Stein, was born in Paris 1926 in, where she lifed and worked her whole life. After studying at the École des Arts Décoratifs, she set up a small Atelier in Belleville.
Together with her husband, the chemist Fernand Steinberger, in the end of the sixties they found a material, which they called
Rhodoid. Lea Stein processed Rhodoid about 12 years in jewellery and accessoires.
The unique effect of the material was based on the fact that several layers of Celluloseacetet were merged and worked out by hand with utmost care.
They remind of articles made of
Zelluloid, coming on the market in the 1920s and 1930s, imitating preferably natural products like ivory, coral, jasper or lapis lazuli.
Lea Stein advanced the seemingly endless possibilities of the celluloid by quite different structures and depth effects.
Particularly outstanding and rare are those who take up the stylistic elements of the Art Déco. This includes the here offered piece, a young modern woman of the 1920s and 1930s, - commonly called as "
FLAPPER" - in a dynamic pose, slim figure, equipped with pants and short hairstyle.
It should not be forgotten that the style "Art Deco" was just named in 1966, as in the french capital the retrospective of the Paris World Exposition was shown: Les Années 25.
In contrast to celluloid, which disappeared almost after the second world war, Rhodoid shows no detectable tracks of brittleness. Gloss and colours are preserved, as Lea Stein conceived.
