„Wesen und Gestalt der Dinge um uns“ is the only publication of Wilhelm Wagenfeld. The collection of older and newer essays provides a clear and brilliant commitment to the cultural importance of industrial production. It has influenced Wagenfeld's generation and as well his pupils.

His designs and also his theoretical contributions to modern design made Wilhelm Wagenfeld to one of the most important, internationally renowned pioneers of industrial design.
His path led him by the teaching in Bremen, the Worpswede artists' colony, the Bauhaus in Weimar, to the factory Schott & Gen. in Jena, to the Vereinigte Lausitzer glass factory to Rosenthal, Peill & Putzler, Braun, Buchsteiner, i.a. and last but not least to the "workshop Wagenfeld" in Stuttgart.

The Wilhelm Wagenfeld foundation in Bremen care for his inherits. His designs are exhibited there and i.a. in the Berlin Bauhaus Archive and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
